Nurturing a love of language and literature is at the heart of our curriculum, providing pupils with the essential skills required to function effectively at school and in the wider world. All lessons contain opportunities for developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
Topics
Speaking and Listening
The pupils are encouraged to:
- Develop listening skills through oral comprehension.
- Pose relevant questions and respond sensibly to what they hear.
- Drama lessons also reinforce the development of pupils’ confidence in speaking clearly to an audience.
- Our pupils can further develop their speaking and listening skills through the English Speaking Board Examinations in Years 3 and 5.
Reading and Writing
These two activities are complementary and reinforce the pupils’ learning.
The pupils are taught:
- Reading skills through phonics and word recognition
- A variety of texts are used to inspire the children's work, along with many opportunities for practical activities.
- In addition to following a reading scheme to teach early reading skills, the children also visit the Library regularly.
- Reading and writing skills are often taught within the context of class novels.
- Grammar and punctuation.
- Techniques to note ideas on plots, characters, and settings.
- Story writing.
Spelling
We use a spelling scheme which develops good habits and knowledge of sounds.
