Reed's School

Ripley Court School merged into the Reed’s School charitable foundation on 31st October 2019.

Reed’s is a leading independent day and boarding school for boys aged 11 to 18 with a co-educational Sixth Form. Located in Cobham, around 15 minutes away, Reed’s has long been a popular choice of senior school for boys on leaving Ripley Court.

Reed’s and Ripley Court have enjoyed a close relationship for many years and share a philosophy of education which focusses on developing the whole child within a nurturing environment and the merger was a natural extension of this strong relationship.

Mark Hoskins, Headmaster of Reed’s, is Executive Head overseeing the strategic direction of both schools with the Board of Governors. Gavin Ryan, the Headmaster of Ripley Court reports to the Executive Head and, with the Ripley Court Senior Leadership Team, is responsible for day-to-day operations as well as helping shape the longer-term strategic plans of the School.

The relationship with Reed’s has already brought a huge number of benefits to both communities:

Increased success rate of applications to Reed’s from Ripley Court: although entry to Reed’s is not automatic from Ripley Court (and indeed, many of our boys choose to go to other senior destinations) the schools’ shared culture and educational philosophy means that boys are prepared very well for Reed’s admissions process. Reed’s staff conduct practice interviews with Year 6 pupils each year. Furthermore, because of the strong relationship between the schools’ leadership teams, Reed’s can really get to know each Ripley Court boy who applies to them, ensuring that a fully informed decision can be made. Between 2022 and 2025, 86% of boys applying from Ripley Court received offers to attend Reed’s.

Experience of a senior school environment: each Upper Court pupil (both boys and girls) visits Reed’s each year for a series of lessons which enhance their understanding of what senior school life is like. Recent experiences have included taking part in Year 7 Science lessons with current Reed’s pupils and a series of workshops getting pupils to think about enterprise. Reed’s teachers love seeing the Ripley Court pupils!

Shared creative and extra-curricular experiences: the schools collaborate in productions, such as 2025’s incredible concert at Fairfield Halls in Croydon at which both school choirs performed together. In addition, peripatetic music teachers and sports coaches (for example in tennis) work across both sites.

Enhanced curriculum planning: collaboration between both senior leaders and teachers means that our schemes of learning are planned with real insight into the progression needed from Ripley Court into a senior school environment. This is true not just for knowledge but also for skills such as digital literacy and effective learning habits.

Shared expertise and economies of scale: a combined governance and support staff structure means both schools benefit from outstanding leadership as well as dedicated financial, regulatory and site management. In addition a number of recent gap year teaching assistants have been Old Reedonians.
