Head Of Science

Head Of Science, Y4 Maths Teacher & Y5 Form Teacher

BSC (Hons) and PhD University of Wales; Cardiff; PGCE University of Wales Institute, Cardiff

At Cardiff University, following a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, Helen completed a PhD on protein sequencing and its application to the treatment of Huntingdon's disease. This award-winning research project provided invaluable exposure to cutting edge techniques and opportunities to present at international conferences.

After completing her PGCE, Helen taught Biology and Chemistry at St Georges College, Weybridge, for 6 years. During lessons and lunchtime surgeries, complex subjects were made accessible to all. In addition to guiding pupils through the GCSE and A-Level syllabus, essential study skills were imparted, producing life-long learners.

In 2008 Helen was appointed Head of Years 12/13 overseeing pastoral care, UCAS and Oxbridge application processes. Individually supporting each pupil as they completed this critical, final phase of school life.

While taking time away from the school environment to start a family, Helen provided private tuition for students as they undertook GCSE and A-Level exams. In a 1-2-1 setting, she produced bespoke learning programs to ensure success.

For the last 6 years, as Head of Science at Ripley Court, Helen has encouraged pupils to develop an interest in science through engaging theoretical and practical lessons that demonstrate and reinforce scientific concepts. STEM week exposes even the youngest learners to a wide variety of topics and takes science out of the classroom into the wider world.

Outside of school, Helen enjoys spending time with her husband and two children and visiting Wales to see family.
