Pre-Prep (Reception - Year 2) Little Court Curriculum

Where every child is supported to shine

At Little Court, we believe children learn best when they are engaged, challenged and inspired. Our Pre-Prep curriculum provides the perfect balance of academic learning, creativity, practical experiences and specialist teaching, helping every child develop the confidence, knowledge and skills needed for future success.

With small class sizes, highly qualified teachers and full-time teaching assistants, children benefit from exceptional levels of support and encouragement. Learning is carefully tailored to individual needs, ensuring every child is both supported and challenged to achieve their very best.

Strong Foundations for Learning

Where learning begins with strong foundations

The Pre-Prep years are a crucial stage in a child’s development. During these formative years, we establish strong foundations in literacy, numeracy and communication while nurturing independence, curiosity and a genuine love of learning.

Phonics is taught daily, with regular assessment ensuring each child receives the right level of challenge and support. Reading, writing and spelling are woven throughout the curriculum, helping children develop confidence, rich vocabulary and strong communication skills. Weekly visits to the school library further encourage a lifelong love of books and reading.

In mathematics, practical problem-solving is at the heart of learning. Children are encouraged to think critically, reason mathematically and develop confidence in applying their knowledge to real-life situations. Lessons are engaging, interactive and designed to ensure every child makes excellent progress. As pupils master key skills such as number bonds and times tables, achievements are celebrated along the way, helping to build confidence, motivation and a sense of pride in their learning.

Specialist Teaching from an Early Age

Where curiosity becomes confidence

One of the things that makes Little Court distinctive is the breadth of specialist teaching available from the very beginning of a child’s school journey.

Alongside their class teacher, pupils benefit from specialist teaching in Forest School, swimming, music, dance, PE, art, food technology and French. These experiences enrich the curriculum, introduce children to new skills and interests, and help build confidence across a wide range of disciplines.

From Reception onwards, children enjoy regular visits to the library and access to specialist facilities across the school. Year 1 pupils begin computing lessons in the IT suite, while Year 2 pupils enjoy specialist art and food technology lessons, encouraging creativity, independence and practical problem-solving.

Inspiring Resources and Learning Spaces

Where Talents are discovered

Children learn in bright, stimulating classrooms supported by high-quality resources designed to bring learning to life. Interactive screens, iPads, construction resources and collaborative activities encourage creativity, critical thinking and teamwork.

We are particularly proud of our dedicated STEM room, a specialist learning space equipped with LEGO robotics, interactive technology and engaging hands-on resources. From Nursery through to Year 6, pupils have opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics in ways that spark curiosity and prepare them for an ever-changing world.

Our extensive library and carefully selected reading schemes provide further opportunities for children to develop confidence as readers, supported through one-to-one reading, small-group sessions and strong home-school partnerships.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Where adventure inspires discovery

Some of the most memorable learning happens beyond the classroom walls. Outdoor learning is an important part of life at Little Court, making full use of our beautiful 19-acre school grounds and dedicated outdoor learning spaces.

Our outdoor classroom includes areas for literacy and maths, a creative play space, sandpit and reading nook, providing inspiring opportunities for exploration, discovery and hands-on learning. Whether solving problems outdoors, working collaboratively or enjoying a story in the fresh air, children develop independence and confidence through meaningful experiences.

Each week, pupils enjoy Forest School sessions in our woodland, where they build, create, explore and develop resilience through interaction with the natural world. Our vegetable garden further brings learning to life, with children planting, harvesting and using their own produce in cooking lessons, helping them develop practical life skills and an understanding of where food comes from.

Enrichment and Opportunity

Where new passions begin

Learning extends far beyond the curriculum at Ripley Court. Throughout the year, pupils enjoy a rich programme of educational visits, visiting speakers and themed events designed to broaden horizons and spark new interests.

From STEM Week, French Day and World Book Day to robotics workshops, author visits and our much-loved petting zoo experience, children are encouraged to ask questions, embrace challenges and discover new passions.

As valued members of the wider Ripley Court family, pupils also participate in school productions, performances, Activities Week, House events and community celebrations, creating lasting memories and developing confidence, teamwork and a strong sense of belonging.
