Ripley CourtSchool

Not-for-profit Foundation

I am most grateful to Ripley Court - it really does exactly what it says on the tin.

Mr C, Former Parent

Ripley Court is a Preparatory School founded in 1893 and administered by the Ripley Court Educational Trust Ltd. This Trust is controlled by a board of unpaid voluntary governors as a charity – which means that it is a not-for-profit organisation and all fee income is ploughed back into the school for the benefit and education of the children.

The governors’ responsibility is to ensure that the school has the management and fiscal structure in place to administer and run the school in a proper manner, and that the long-term interests and development of the school are seen to. The Governors consist of a team of individuals with expertise in various fields (such as law, accounting, local council matters and education). The majority are parents of former pupils at Ripley Court.

The Trust is subject to the auspices of its constitution, which is ultimately overseen by the Charity Commissioners. In addition to the education provided for the children, the school is keen to ensure that its charitable status is justified by looking to its Public Benefit requirements. This means that the school supports local children's charities, such as Cherry Trees, as well as having a close association with village educational and children's associations, such as the Scouts and the Ripley youth club. We also support the local Ripley Primary school by allowing use of our computing and sports facilities.
A small proportion of the fees is calculated surplus to immediate running and maintenance costs and used for major capital investment.

In general, the finances of the school, which are professionally kept and audited, are run in such a way that the school holds considerable reserves of cash - from time to time these reserves are reduced, perhaps with the addition of some bank borrowing, to put up a new building. This prudent policy has ensured that the school has survived many ups and downs in the wider economy. The Headmaster is happy to provide the latest position when asked.

The school is accredited by the ISC, and the Headmaster is himself a qualified Independent School inspector and a member of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools, or IAPS. This is an organisation of about 550 similar schools which provides training, advice, inspection and quality control for those schools.
