Apple juicing in The Ark

Mr and Mrs Whiddett made a special visit to The Ark this term to show the children how to make apple juice.

The couple brought along their apple juice making equipment which included an apple chopping machine and a wooden apple press. They also brought along bags full of home grown apples from their orchard.

Mr Whiddett started off the session with apple picking by using a large hook to get the apples from the tree which is located right next to the Ark. The children watched in fascination as the apples fell to the ground which they then collected once it was safe to do so.

After collecting the apples, the children took it in turns to put apples in the chopping machine which quickly cut them up into tiny pieces. Once a whole bucket full of chopped apples was collected, they were put into the press ready to be made into apple juice! All of the children got to have a go at twisting the handle and watched as delicious apple juice started to trickle from the press into the bucket. After all their hard work, the children tasted their freshly made apple juice which they thoroughly enjoyed – they even queued up for seconds!

We would like to thank Mr and Mrs Whiddett for their generous time.
